  • Dr. Ahalapitiya H Jayatissa (Jay) is a Professor of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Toledo. His current research is in the areas of synthesis and application of nanomaterials, semiconductor devices, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and energy conversion and storage devices. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), DARPA and the Department of Energy, USA. He is a recipient of prestigious NSF CAREER Award in 2003 for his research. Jay also won the outstanding faculty research award in Engineering in 2011 and Excellence in Supervision of Undergraduate Research Award in 2012.

    Prior to join UT, he had been working at the Imaging Device Division at the Research and Technical Laboratory (STRL) of Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) in Tokyo and Materials and Chemistry Divisions in Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in USA. He has authored/coauthored more than 120 refereed papers and 30 conference proceedings. He has obtained his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Shizuoka University in Japan (1995). Jay earned his BS in Physical Science with honors and MPhil (Under a grant from NARESA 87-89) in Physics from the University of Ruhuna. He is a winner of Scholarship from Japan Ministry of Education (MONBUSHO, 1992) for his PhD studies and a Research fellowship from Science and Technology Corporation in Japan (JST, 1996). He is a senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, 2000) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME, 2000). Jay is also an active member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME, 2000) and International Society for Optical Engineers (SPIE, 2000). Jay was elevated to the Fellow rank of Institute of Physics (FInstP) in 2018.
