overview

  • I am a tenured Associate Professor at UTCOMLS, where I hold dual appointments in the Departments of Medical Education and Medical Microbiology and Immunology. I joined UTCOMLS in 2009 and was promoted to tenured Associate Professor in 2015 within the Academic Basic Scientist Track. Recognizing my evolving professional interests and accomplishments, in late 2022, I requested a dual appointment in the Department of Medical Education and recently formally changed to the Basic Science Educator Track. My research laboratory focuses on understanding the regulation of the complement system and innate immune system. My research and educational work have resulted in 63 peer-reviewed publications, including four book chapters, 26 of which are since promotion to Associate Professor, overall contributing to approximately $3.4 million in basic research funding, with $1.6 million secured post-promotion. I currently collaborate with colleagues in both education and basic science research endeavors. In addition to research, I direct and teach within several critical courses, including the Immunology and the Infectious Diseases systems for first-year medical students, the Advanced Immunology course for graduate students, and serve as clerkship director for a Veterinary Medicine elective for fourth-year students. I have received awards in recognition of my teaching efforts. I have strived to make significant contributions to the academic community through additional leadership roles. I serve as Editor-in-Chief of Immunobiology and Associate Editor of the Journal of Immunology. I am also the Past-Treasurer of the International Complement Society and an active member of the American Association of Immunology Education Committee. At UTCOMLS, I carry out a variety of institutional service, chairing the Assessment Committee for UTCOMLS and serving on various other committees, including those focused on diversity and inclusion, curriculum development, research development, and student ethics. Some of my past roles include serving as a standing member of the NIH Innate Immunity and Inflammation study section, Vice Chair and Chair of the IACUC, Chair of the organizing committee for WISDOM (Women in STEM Day of Meetings) events on the UT Health Science Campus, and member of the American Association of Immunologists Program Committee.
