Dr. Qiu is a dedicated physician-scientist and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Toledo, Ohio, a role assumed in July 2018. In the position, Dr. Qiu has consistently contributed to the advancement of medical research, education, and clinical care.
Research: Dr. Qiu leads a Quality Improvement Research Project aimed at refining healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes. Collaborating with statisticians, Dr. Qiu guides clinical resident physicians in utilizing data analysis techniques. The research, utilizing statistical models such as the multiplicative Holt-Winters model and a linear model with autoregressive moving-average time series, has revealed seasonal trends in hyponatremia mortality rates, offering valuable insights for clinical practice.
Clinical Trials and Educational Support: Dr. Qiu also serves as a sub-Principal Investigator, participating in clinical trials exploring new treatments for type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Qiu's dedication to medical education is evident through his mentorship of medical students, fostering clinical skills and offering guidance in residency program selection and interview preparation.
Mentorship and Leadership: Dr. Qiu is deeply committed to mentorship, guiding premedical and medical students on their academic and professional paths. His mentorship has positively influenced the careers of several students. Additionally, Dr. Qiu instructs in the Advanced Program in Bioinformatics, teaching Python programming to enhance productivity among doctorate-level students.
Previous Achievements: Before joining the faculty, Dr. Qiu completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Toledo College of Medicine. During this time, he helped with Dr. Willey’s lab and contributed to bioinformatical RNAseq analysis in hereditary COPD pathogenesis. In his early research as a Graduate Research Assistant, Dr. Qiu developed computational approaches to study genetic evolution and conducted analyses of data from the '1000 Genomes' project, shedding light on distant genetic relations in humans through rare single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).
Dr. Qiu's modest yet impactful contributions to research, education, and mentorship reflect his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and nurturing future healthcare professionals.
