description

 • Author and art educator Dr. Jason Cox will lead players through the first lesson from the Curriculum Guide for Five-Hundred-Year-Old Vampire (FYOV), Drawing on the Past. FYOV is an educational game where players create “keepsakes” (Khor, 2021) that foster growth in Art and Writing and explores the history, legends, artistry, and artifacts of different times and places. Lesson #1-Drawing on the Past introduces students to visual research by having them find and modify an artwork that corresponds to their character’s context of origin by inserting an image of their character into a pre-existing work. Articulating their process using the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design provides a formal vocabulary to describe works going forward, and discussing what the work means for the student versus what it means for the character gives them the beginnings of a thematic structure students can use to construct narratives.
