description

  • This chapter provides a brief overview of how notions of spirituality entered the realm of theatre via the symbolist movement and the occult revival that began to bloom in Europe and the US during the late 19th century. Then it surveys approaches to studying the spirituality in theatre and performance that contemporary scholars have recently proposed. After this, two forms of spiritual theatre are discussed: that which is designed to represent spiritual meaning for participants and that which is designed to induce spiritual experience within participants.
