Originating in anthropology, fieldwork is a method through which researchers generate knowledge about social life by observing the cultural behavior, cultural knowledge, and cultural artifacts of a given group of people in their natural environment. When applied to the discipline of communication, fieldwork is used to discover patterns of communication within communities and the ways in which these patterns convey and construct social meaning.
