description

  • This study is on analyzing the impact of smart phone usage intensity on students` academic success. Measurement of output and productivity in education presents challenges. New issues are arising with advances in information and communication technology. Smart phone use has become very common among college students in the last decade. Even though technology supports student-learning outcomes, excessive smartphone use may be a distraction factor in academic achievement. In this study, we investigate if different distraction levels arising from cell phone use have an impact on students` productivity. In order to answer these questions, we are currently running an online survey with students at UT. We will analyze screen time predictors of academic achievement (measured by GPA) by controlling demographics, socio-economic variables, and ACT scores. We are interested in the determinants of student success and our measure is the actual college GPA (the dependent variable). We try to isolate the effect of cell phone usage intensity on college GPA. In order to achieve this goal, we have included the most important factors in our survey such as the actual ACT scores and a large set of socio-economic and psychological factors.
