overview

  • I am an Orthopedic surgeon from India. I was born in Vida, a small village in the state of Maharashtra. Observing the sparcity of physicians in rural settings leading to premature deaths due to common natural hazards as simple as venomous snake bites, attracted me to the medical speciality. I completed my medical graduate studies from one of the oldest institutes established by the British colonies in Government Medical college ad Wanless Hospital in Miraj.

I completed my Orthopedic surgery residency in the Jan 2000 at Dr. V.M. Medical College, Solapur and I joined my alma mater as a Lecturer in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. During my early months, I realized that complex intra-articular injuries that lead to post-traumatic arthritis required joint arthroplasty. I went to the United Kingdom after sitting and passing my Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) exam. I undertook my Basic Surgical training to enable my higher specialist training in Orthopedics by completion rigorous surgical multispecialty rotation and passing my Membership exam of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2006.

I came to the USA and completed fellowships in Adult Reconstruction, Limb Lengthening, Deformity Correction, and Orthopedic Trauma Surgery after passing my 3-part US medical Licensing Exams (USMLE) in 2006. After my ECFMG certification and medical licensing I joined a small community hospital in Michigan to enable service in an underserved area in USA.

I had the honor of starting the Department of Orthopedic surgery at Harbor Beach Community hospital in August 2011. Here, I was able to provide specialist care including Total Joint Replacement surgery and Orthopedic trauma from 2011 to June 2016.

I joined the University of Toledo Medical center in July 2016 as an Assistant Professor in the Department iof Orthopedic surgery to fulfil my passion to teach as well as enable me to sit my board certification examination in Orthopedic surgery. Here I have always enjoyed my clinical practice in academic and community hospital setting, along with an opportunity to teach and innovate. I have been currently teaching physical and occupational therapy students, nursing students, physician assistant students, medical students as well as residents in an ACGME Accredited Orthopedic residency program. My main topics of interest  have been general orthopedic surgery including Total joint Replacements, Trauma, Deformity Correction, which are my areas of clinical expertise.

I currently continue to travel and cover three remote community hospitals; Promedica Defiance regional Hospital, Defiance OH, Henry County Hospital, Napolean, OH, and Hillsdale Community Hospital, MI; to provide orthopedic care in Trauma and Joint replacements. I was able to revive the lost total joint replacement program back after almost 2 years of lapse at the Hillsdale Hospital in Michigan.

I have passed my part -1 Board certification in Orthopedic Surgery(BCOS) offered by American Board of Physician Specialities (ABPS) USA, and recognised by Medicare and Medicaid, as well as multiple  state Board Licensing authorities. I paln to sit my Part-2 BCOS exam on the 5th November 2022.  I will be Board Eligible in Orthopedic surgery after promotion to associate professor and will be eligible to sit my American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) via the Academic pathway.

I have been able to contribute in the form of education of orthopedic residents at UTMC as well as have been providing "Proctorship" to local orthopedic surgeons at Hillsdale Hospital in Michigan by teaching my skills in Adult reconstruction as well as Orthopedic Trauma. Overall, I have been able to expand the scope of my subspecialty to remote and smaller hospitals.

I have been able to help many patients in limb preservation. In one specific case, I was able to conduct one of the most complex limb preserving procedure for a patient who had 10 failed surgical procedures due to infection and a failed knee replacement in the past.

I have been able to fix and salvage failed hips and knee replacements as well as shoulders for patients with severe bone loss as well as complex Peri-prosthetic fractures.

I am constantly progressing by actively undertaking research in form of clinical case reports and have published with medical students and residents by mentoring them. I currently also mentor them in clinical settings as a part of the ICE program as well as mentorship in my speciality. I have published a multiple case reports including an inresting case of severe total knee arthrofibrosis post removal of GIST tumor, leading to profound stiffness. I have also published review articles including Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), and a complex case of failed hip fixation converted to hip replacement in a young patient.  I am on the editorial board of mutliple peer reviewed journals including British Medical Journal (BMJ)Case reports, Journal of Orthropedis and Orthopedic surgery(JOOS), American Research Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology (AJORT) since 2016, as well other journals including the Translational Journal at UTMC, Asian Journal of Orthopedics (AJOR) and Journal of Arthritis.

I have been invited to write a book chapter on Head and neck anatomy in relation to prosthetic rehabilitation by Elsevier publishing in collaboration with maxillofacial onco-surgeons in India and have sumitted my final draft in the press.

I have untaken leadership in enabling orthopedic care, after being taught at the Leadership Institute at UTMC in 2020, at the two community hospitals along with my partners to deliver the specialty care seamlessly.

I am involved teaching the medical students as well as residents in Orthopedic Surgery utilizing clinics, didactic lecture presentations, during surgeries in the Operating Rooms and undertaking SIM labs in my specialty at UTMC. I have been invited to community patient education seminars in long term care centers by Americare as well as Promedica Defiance regional hospital, and Regional Orthopedic Symposia.

I am currently a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons (AAOS) as well as member of the Orthopedic Trauma Association (OTA) and Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

I have exceptional abilities of delivering the care of my subspecialty to diverse strata of patients with complex physiological and pathological issues using evidence based medicine for optimal outcomes; I have also been able to contribute intellectually as well as economically, not only to the growth of my entrepreneurial department at Harbor Beach Community Hospital, but also the University of Toledo Medical Center and its satellite offices and community hospitals.

My promotion to Associate professor in Orthopedic surgery will enable me to complete my board exam, which will help me continue to expand the scope of my clinical practice as well as fufill the vision of  the University of Toledo in local and statewide community care.
