Joseph Sferra MD is currently the Chair Department of Surgey University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences
He is currently the Academic Chief of Surgery, ProMedica Health System, and Chief of Surgery, ProMedica Physician Group (PPG). In these roles he has operational and strategic oversight for surgical services for PPG.
Dr. Sferra is a practicing board-certified general surgeon with special interests in endocrine surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology, and complex problems in general surgery.
Dr. Sferra is Professor of Surgery at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. He is deeply involved in educating medical students and residents through hands-on surgery experiences and bedside teaching. He serves as a mentor for them throughout their education and training. He is a recipient of the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence 2014. He conducts clinical outcomes research.
Dr. Sferra serves on several boards including the Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts, the Frederick Douglass Surgical Research Foundation, and the Wayne State Surgical Society. He is serving his third term as president of the Toledo Surgical Society and is president of the board of the ProMedica Surgery Co-Management Company. He is past President of the Board of Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Dr. Sferra is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He has served as President, Ohio Chapter, ACS, and Governor, ACS 2006-2012. Prior to taking on his roles at ProMedica, he served as managing partner of a 17-surgeon group.
