1. Education Background:
Dr. Jian-yu Lu (S'86--M'88--SM'99--F'08) received the B.S. degree in physics/electrical engineering in February 1982 from Fudan University, Shanghai, China; the M.S. degree in physics/acoustics in 1985 from Tongji University, Shanghai, China; and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering in 1988 from Southeast University, Nanjing, China. From December 1988 to February 1990, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Mayo Medical School, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.
2. Academic Positions and Research Interests:
Since 1997, Dr. Lu has been a professor in the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Toledo (UT), Toledo, OH, USA, and since 1998, he has been an adjunct professor in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. He served as a Graduate Director of the Department of Bioengineering at UT from 1999 to 2002.
Before joining UT as a professor in 1997, he was an associate professor of biophysics at Mayo Medical School and an Associate Consultant at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Mayo Clinic/Foundation, Rochester, MN, USA.
His research interests are in acoustic imaging and tissue identification, super-resolution imaging, medical ultrasonic transducers, and ultrasonic beam forming and propagation.
3. Awards and Patents:
Dr. Lu received the 2016 Distinguished Service Award from the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) for his services as the President of UFFC-S, Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (TUFFC), UFFC-S Symposium organizations, and other activities. He also received the 2021 Engineer of the Year Award from the IEEE Toledo Section. Due to his long-term services in IEEE UFFC-S, he was awarded AdCom (Administrative Committee) Emeritus status in 2024 for life.
Dr. Lu received the Outstanding Paper Award from the UFFC-S for two of his papers published in the IEEE TUFFC in 1992 for the discovery of X waves that, in theory, can propagate to an infinite distance without spreading (diffraction-free). These waves have applications in medical imaging (in both ultrasound and optics) and physics.
Dr. Lu received the Edward C. Kendall (a Nobel Laureate at Mayo Clinic) Award from the Mayo Alumni Association, Mayo Foundation, in 1992, for his meritorious research; the FIRST Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1991; and the Biomedical Engineering Research Grant Award from the Whitaker Foundation in 1991, in addition to long-term R01-type NIH grant award.
Dr. Lu has been granted five United States patents and filed one provisional patent application on March 1, 2024. In all of the patents, he was the principal inventor (sole or first author).
4. Fellows and Membership of Professional Societies:
Dr. Lu is a Fellow of IEEE (conferred in 2008), a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) (conferred in 2005), and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) (conferred in 2007), in addition to being a member of other professional societies such as the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a life member of Sigma Xi.
5. Professional Services:
Dr. Lu served as an Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE TUFFC from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2007 for two terms. He also served as a member of the Editorial Board of an IEEE-wide journal (IEEE Access) from 2016 to 2021 for two terms.
He was the General Chair of the 2008 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS) that was held from November 2-5, 2008, in Beijing, China, with more than 1000 attendees. He also served as the Technical Program Committee (TPC) Chair of the 2001 IEEE IUS - a joint meeting with the World Congress on Ultrasonics (WCU) held in Atlanta, GA, USA, in October 2001.
He was elected as the President-Elect of the UFFC-S for the term from 2012 to 2013, served as the President from 2014 to 2015 (a member of IEEE Technical Activity Board or TAB in 2014 and 2015), the Junior Past President and the UFFC-S Nominations Chair from 2016 to 2017, and the Senior Past President from 2018 to 2019.
He was a member of the TPC of the IEEE IUS conferences from 1999 to 2023 and was an Exhibits Chair of several past IEEE IUS conferences. He was elected as an Elected Administrative Committee (AdCom) Member of the IEEE UFFC-S for a three-year term from 2009 to 2011. He was the Chair of the UFFC-S Bylaws and Constitution Review and Revision Committee that has completed two major revisions (2011 and 2017 versions) of the UFFC-S Constitution and Bylaws. He is currently a member of the UFFC-S Ultrasonics Standing Committee (UltraCom) and the Nominations Chair of the UltraCom.
In addition to the services to the IEEE UFFC-S, He is also active in the IEEE Toledo Section as a member of the Executive Committee (ExCom), the Chair of Membership Development, and a Member-at-Large.
