  • Dr. Laukka was appointed to serve as the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education in March 2020. Dr. Laukka graduated with a Doctorate in Molecular Medicine and Genetics from Wayne State University, School of Medicine where he studied the pathogenesis of inherited Leukodystrophies using advanced neuroimaging modalities. He completed a Master of Science degree in Basic Medical Sciences from WSUSOM in 2011 and a Bachelor of Science in 2004, in Physiology from the Department of Natural Sciences at Michigan State University.

    Dr. Laukka was formerly a faculty member in the Departments of Radiology, Neurology, and Ophthalmology at Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic and Human Medicine. He served in several leadership capacities that involved the expansion and operation of the College of Osteopathic Medicine to SE Michigan which involved course leadership and instruction that involved both, College-wide and campus-specific, across the preclinical curriculum. He also provided oversight and delivery of weekly post-graduate medical education to the Detroit Medical Center residency and fellowship program in Orthopedic and Hand surgery and played an important team role in the development, organization, and reform of a new integrated curriculum that involved distance learning to two regional medical school campuses.

    The University of Toledo recruited Dr. Laukka in 2012 to the Department of Neuroscience and in 2015 he became the Associate Dean for Foundational Science Curriculum. He led a team that implemented a new preclinical curricular design in 2017. He played an instrumental role in orchestrating the design of the leadership team -its roles and responsibilities. He is intimately involved in the alignment and ongoing development of the curricular structure to refine the educational experience of the students. He has focused his interest on evolving the academic culture that involves the role of faculty in teaching tomorrow’s healthcare providers, students' adaptability to life-long learning, and the nature of content in which the foundational sciences are developed and delivered. He is engaged in scholarly service at all levels of the organization, involving the curriculum, LCME, faculty recruitment/development, student affairs, allied health programs, and body donation program to name a few.

    Dr. Laukka is an active participant in faculty development programs that include the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Educators in Health Professions. He also serves as a visiting professor for Cornell Weil Medical School and St. George’s University SOM, where he teaches anatomy. He also serves on editorial boards/faculty councils that develop intellectual content for medical student education.

    Dr. Laukka is a trained multi-discipline educator with experience in providing leadership and educational content across the continuum of basic medical sciences. He provides an educational experience, leadership, and instruction in different basic science disciplines/organ systems that include gross anatomy, neuroscience, physiology, histology, and pathology –all of
    which reflect his initiative of being a diverse multi-disciplined educator. He has a strong interest in medical education that encompasses curricular design and content integration, novel methods for content delivery across the basic medical sciences, and innovative methods employed using technology. The outcome of integrating the foundations of medicine with clinical medicine is to stimulate and encourage critical and higher-order thinking –qualities that are necessary for an evolving and competent clinician.
