description

 •
The current war in Sudan stems from a long series of conflicts including its colonial experience and the postcolonial period after gaining independence from Britain and Egypt in 1956. Following a nationwide popular uprising against the authoritarian and religious fundamentalist regime of Omar-al-Bashir and his military in 2018-2019, a power-sharing deal ensued between the Sudanese civilian opposition and the military. In October 2021, the military reneged on its promise to transfer power to civilians. On April 15, 2023, two of the largest military factions, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), began fighting each other in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. The conflict quickly spread throughout the country. Guided by PEN America’s media literacy guidelines, this presentation hopes to discuss strategies for developing the basic tools and processes for critical thinking for librarians, library staff, and the public to analyze and distinguish the misinformation, disinformation, and facts surrounding this topic. Our goal is to promote awareness and facilitate educational and civil discussion.
