Invited keynote talk (Linda Smith Lecture) at the 28th Annual UToledo Banned Books Vigil. This lecture examined research and scholarship on the life of Edgar Allan Poe, whose controversial works have often been challenged and removed from school readings lists and libraries. Additionally, this lecture explored Poe's mental health struggles with addiction, and how this potentially informed themes in his writing. It also debunked several myths surrounding the caricature often made of Poe, and aimed to "unveil" the real Poe - a working writer and master craftsman of the English language.
