description

 •
Institutional Repositories have long been vital to sharing knowledge with communities of academic researchers, students, and citizen scholars. Just about every item in an IR is a learning object to educate and inform viewers. In addition to descriptive information, context is also critical to complete understanding; therefore, metadata records provide additional information about the OER such as the academic discipline and unit of the author(s). Contributions from faculty and student researchers are exemplary efforts because they aim to educate communities. Archival collections are also ideal as OERs because archives teach about history and context by educating communities about provenance and authenticity documented in the metadata record. Thus, not only can readers access the digital objects offering images and texts as primary sources but they can understand provenance and historical context in the metadata record and hyperlink to access finding aids. The same concept applies to other OERs: viewers can access, read, and use full-text searching to understand more about a topic and the author’s background. The University of Toledo Digital Repository (UTDR) has a 25-year history in providing communities access to open educational materials. More recently, the UTDR began to include virtual exhibitions to prolong access in digital form to physical exhibitions ending after a few months. A combination of rich metadata and hyperlinks enable viewers to navigate these collections and their thematic relationships as well. Creative metadata approaches are necessary to accomplish this. This presentation would demonstrate unique uses of institutional repositories as OERs spanning multiple disciplines and community interests.
