•
Abstract: A resident physician must be clinically competent and maintain wellness while navigating academics and the business of healthcare. ACGME requires milestone attainments in these parameters without mandating the specifics for implementation. Using gamification in medical education fulfills these requirements via novel interactive programming. A QI project was designed to study the impact of gamification in resident education. The targets for impact included medical knowledge, leadership, providing feedback, anticipating needs, adapting to change, defining a team’s goals & objectives, trust, communication, teamwork, sense of wellness, and ability to care for patients. Psychiatry and Family Medicine residencies participated. In Session 1, participants worked in small groups to create “Taboo” style cards of medical diagnoses. In Session 2, participants played the game. Each session had an anonymous pre- and post- session Likert scale questionnaire examining beliefs about gamification in medical education. For Session 1, 19 participants completed the pre- survey and 11 completed the post- survey, compared to Session 2 (17 completed the pre- survey and 13 completed the post- survey). There were statistically significant findings in Session 1 and across all questions for Session 2 (p<0.05). Surprisingly, the survey response with the highest statistical significance (p<0.01) was the improved ability to care for patients. Healthcare requires teamwork and shared knowledge for success in patient care and to avoid burnout. Given the high level of burnout among resident physicians, creative interventions that can effectively address multiple issues (e.g. medical knowledge, communication, and teamwork) should be considered as an educational augmentation strategy.
