  • This work proposes a competency-based education (CBE) framework to teach an online-delivered initial graduate course in research. The framework includes the role of digital badging technology to support the assessment of research-related and other supporting knowledge of skills. A critical outcome of this framework is the recognition of prior learning, which will potentially allow students to be placed in varying points of the course. Even though CBE itself is an old idea, it is finding new life and potential in our current technologically advanced setting.
