Since their emergence roughly five years ago, digital badges have been adopted by many organizations including universities. This study examined the emergent peer-reviewed literature of the adoption of digital badges and digital open badges in higher education. Forty-three peer-reviewed publications were located of which 14 focused on higher education adoption exclusively. Early results from the limited pool of studies revealed that the application of this technology is mostly traditional in terms of capturing formal learning in traditional classroom settings.
