Excelling in supply chain management (SCM) is a challenge. Businesses struggling with SCM can try to emulate the practices of firms excelling in SCM if they know who these firms are. Information signaling theory asserts that a credential can be a signal of possessing an underlying capability. Gartner annually publishes a list of who they believe are the top 25 companies worldwide in SCM. Being on this list can be viewed as a credential. However, credentials must be examined for their value. We develop a modified form of the event study methodology to see if the Gartner credential has value-relevance.
