This essay examines the linguistic and narrative process involved in stereotyping. Focusing on women assumed insane, newspaper items published in six English speaking nations reveal how labeling stoked the fear of madness in everybody. These items reinforced the assumption that women could not participate in public business without risking dire harm to themselves and others.
