I am currently an Associate Professor of Medicine with Tenure at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, where I serve as Program Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and Medical Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. My academic career integrates clinical care, medical education, mentorship, research, quality improvement, and institutional and international leadership.

My clinical practice includes the full spectrum of pulmonary and critical care medicine. I work primarily in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, where I lead a multidisciplinary team caring for critically ill patients and work closely with medical students, residents, pulmonary and critical care fellows, pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals. I perform a broad range of procedures, including bronchoscopy, endotracheal intubation, central venous catheter placement, and chest tube insertion. I also provide inpatient pulmonary consultation to medical and surgical services and perform diagnostic bronchoscopies for conditions including lung cancer and pulmonary infections. In my outpatient pulmonary clinic, I evaluate patients with a broad range of respiratory conditions, including dyspnea, chronic cough, pulmonary abnormalities, and patients requiring preoperative pulmonary evaluation. I also supervise and interpret pulmonary function testing.

Medical education and mentorship are major focuses of my academic career. As Program Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, I oversee fellow education, clinical training, curriculum development, evaluation, mentorship, recruitment, and ACGME compliance. Since my promotion to Associate Professor, I have directly taught and mentored approximately 27 pulmonary and critical care fellows, more than 150 internal medicine residents, over 450 medical students, and 10 advanced practice providers. Under my leadership, the fellowship has maintained continuous ACGME accreditation without citations and achieved a 100% first-time board pass rate in both Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine over the past three years. I have also emphasized scholarly development among trainees, contributing to more than 150 abstracts presented at ATS and CHEST and over 50 peer-reviewed publications by fellows and trainees.

As Medical Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit, I provide clinical and administrative leadership focused on improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of critical care delivery. I have led multidisciplinary quality-improvement initiatives involving the Sepsis Core Bundle, Code Blue and Rapid Response, COPD and Pneumonia Readmission, Postoperative Respiratory Failure, pressure ulcer prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and critical care order-set development. These collaborative efforts have contributed to exceeding Vizient quality benchmarks, reducing hospital-acquired conditions, and improving the University of Toledo Medical Center’s CMS Hospital Overall Star Rating from 2 to 4 stars.

My scholarly activities focus on pulmonary and critical care medicine, including pulmonary vascular disease, bronchiectasis, ECMO, lung cancer, respiratory infections, and critical care outcomes. My research includes national database studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, clinical research, and collaborative clinical trials. I have served as a principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple clinical studies, including industry-sponsored and collaborative research projects. I am also actively involved in mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows in research and scholarly activity.

My educational activities extend beyond the University of Toledo. I have served as Course Director and Instructor for Society of Critical Care Medicine Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) programs and directed an FCCS course at the University of Toledo’s Lloyd A. Jacobs Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center. I have also participated in international critical care and point-of-care ultrasound education in collaboration with the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Palestine Red Crescent Society, and Palestine Medical Council, and have delivered invited lectures in pulmonary and critical care medicine in the United States and internationally.

My contributions to clinical medicine and education have been recognized with the Dean Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2020 and the Dean’s Award for Early Career Clinical Excellence in 2023 from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. In addition, I serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Palestinian Medical and Pharmaceutical Journal and as a peer reviewer for several international medical journals.

Overall, my academic career is centered on providing high-quality pulmonary and critical care, educating and mentoring the next generation of physicians, advancing clinical research and scholarship, improving healthcare quality and patient safety, and expanding critical care education both locally and internationally.
