Dr. Claudiu Alin Georgescu is an infectious diseases specialist at the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine at the University Of Toledo. He serves as the Interim Division Chief of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine and Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship at The University of Toledo Medical Center.
He obtained his medical degree from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, in 1998. After medical school, he completed a mandatory post-graduation internship at the Central Military Hospital and worked as a general practitioner at Hemomed Health in Bucharest. In 2003, he relocated to the United States to complete his internal medicine residency and subsequent infectious diseases fellowship at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Dr. Georgescu joined the faculty at The University of Toledo in 2008 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Over his tenure, he has focused on clinical care, teaching, and hospital committee leadership. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and assumed the role of Interim Division Chief in May 2024. He is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine, holds an HIV Specialist credential from the American Academy of HIV Medicine, and maintains licensures in Ohio and Michigan. He served as the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program director from 2015 to 2026.
His clinical work includes inpatient consultative service at UTMC and ProMedica hospitals, outpatient work in general infectious diseases and Ryan White clinics. He teaches medical students, residents, and infectious diseases fellows through formal lectures, bedside activities and simulated cases. His publications center on general infectious diseases topics ranging from syphilis and HIV to sepsis and antibiotic utilization. His quality improvement projects and research focus on the outcomes of inpatient antimicrobial stewardship and drug-resistant bacterial strains.
